Shawarma is one of all-time favorite Middle Eastern food. Essentially, it’s pieces of thinly shredded meat, that have been stuffed inside a flatbread or pita, topped with hummus, fresh veggies, and yogurt sauce.

 

The meat used in the Shawarma is marinated in olive oil and spices, then traditionally cooked vertically on a burner, sliced, and served.  Shawarma meat contains more spices and seasonings, often served in a wrap form, or on a platter with a pile of toppings and sauces.

 

The shawarma seasoning includes cumin, coriander, paprika, and turmeric along with some warm spices like cloves, nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon and it’s super easy to make.

The Sauce

The Shawarma Sauce is infused with fresh cubed cucumber, tomatoes, and onion.

Broiling the meat

Shawarma is marinated in olive oil and spices, then traditionally cooked vertically.

CHICKEN SHAWARMA WRAP

INGREDIENTS:

  • Greek yogurt 1 cup
  • Lemon juice 1/4 cup
  • Olive oil 2 tbsp
  • Tomato paste 1
  • Garlic cloves, minced 3
  • Red pepper flakes 1/4 tsp
  • Boneless chicken breasts,1/2-inch strips  2lbs

Filling:

INSTRUCTIONS :

  • Whisk yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil, tomato paste, garlic, cumin, coriander, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes together in a bowl.
  • Mix in chicken strips.
  • Cover bowl with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator to marinate overnight.
  • Set an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat and preheat the oven’s broiler.
  • Remove chicken from the bowl and arrange in a single layer on a broiling pan.
  • Discard excess marinade.
  • Broil chicken, turning once, until juices run clear, about 10 minutes.
  • Take a pita or flatbread, spread hummus, yogurt sauce, veggies, pickles, and chicken.
  • Roll it tight and serve with hummus.
